Harry Potter Characters That Didn't Make the Movies
As I’ve said before, details often get lost when books are adapted to movies or TV shows. The Harry Potter movies were as much a halmark of my childhood as the books. Unfortunatly there were some great characters left out of the movies.
Professor Binns
This esteemed professor taught the History of Magic class and was the only ghost on the Hogwarts faculty. The story goes that Binns died in his sleep one day in the staff room, but his ghost went on to go to teach his classes the next morning as if nothing happened. Unfortunatly, Binns is not the most engaging of professors and mostly drones on in his lectures. His class is usually seen as a free period or nap time by students. Binns was not a central charecter in the first five books so it is understandable why he was left out of the movies. His major plot contribution was in the Chamber of Secrets where he explained the legend behing the chamber in class after Hermione inturupts his traditional lecture. The movies gave this role to McGonagall instead.
Charlie Weasley
The second eldest member of the Weasley children left England after Hogwarts to work with dragons in Romania. He is barley mentioned in the movies however, and never shows up. In the books however, Harry meets him in the Goblet of Fire when he returns home to visit family for the Quidditch World Cup along with Bill. He returned later in the book as he was part of the team supplying the dragons for the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament. He even joined the Order of the Phoenix, but rather than return to Englan Charlie was charged woth recruiting Wizards abroad. In the Battle of Hogwarts he joined with the group of international wizards he had recruited to help turning the tide of the battle.
Winky
Winky was Barty Crouch’s House Elf and a part of the plot for the Goblet of Fire. She had mainly been charged with the caring of Barty Crouch Jr. who’s father broke him out of Azkaban in secret and kept under the imperius curse for years. It was Winky that was framed for casting the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup by Crouch Jr. who uses the chaos of the Death Eater attack to escape. Winky is then saked by the elder Crouch. She ends up at Hogwarts with Dobby. Unlike Dobby however, Winky is devistated at having been freed and falls into a great depression and spends her days getting drunk off Butterbeer. She drops little hints in her interactions with the main trio but these clues don’t come together untill it is reaveled that Crouch Jr. was masquarading as Alastor Mad-Eye Moody all year. Winky is present for the interigation and reavel helping to put the pieces together.
Peeves
The number one charecter anyone who read the books will tell you that they wish had been in the movies is Peeves. Peeves is the poltergeist that haunts Hogwarts. He spends his days playing endless jokes of students and staff alike. He listens to no one except the Bloddy Barron, Slytherine House’s ghost, who he is terrified of. He is a wonderfull light and laugh especially in latter books with much heavier content. Peeves is most noted for his battle against Umbridge in the Order of the Pheonix. While making the grand exit from Hogwarts the Weasley twins command Peeves to “give her hell for us”. Peeves actually takes these words to heart saluting the Weasley twins before they leave and spending all his time after causing as much toruble for Umbridge as possible. Hilariously the professors don’t even try to stop Peeves and in one great scene when passing Peeves trying to unscrew a chandelier under her breath whispers to him it unscrews the other way.
